Artist’s Statement

Tharina Gillen

I knew from a very small age that art was going to be part of my life.  Born in South Africa, I was influenced by nature and a wide range of colors.  Both these aspects play a big part in my paintings.

As a visual learner, I incorporated my art in every aspect of my life and I used to draw pictures to remember information.  I do not have a specific style and use different techniques.  In my realistic paintings, water, the seaside, and landscapes are often the main subject of my work.  Other times I just let the inspiration flow into my brush, and I do not know what it will look like until it is finished.

Color always dominates these creations.  I choose the medium according to the subject of every individual work.  My favorite is Acrylic, but I also use other media, it just depends on my state of mind on that particular day.  In August 2007 one of my paintings was sold at the “White Pages Art Awards “in New Zealand” where all the money went for charity.  Some of my art were sold in Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, England and France. In 2015 and 2016 my art were on display at the Toowoomba Grammar School Art Show, the Hampton Festival and at the Downlands College Art Exhibition.

As of late my art changed a lot and I add a 3D effect to my art and round it off with Epoxy Resin.  â€‹I am now living on Bribie Island, QLD, Australia and I sell my art locally at "All About Jerky"  - 1/1102-1108 Bribie Island Road, Ningi.
